I grew up a non-surfer when I was younger, but I was subscribed to Rip Curl’s ‘The Search’ series via email. I didn’t think I’d ever get into the surfing world at that stage, yet here I am, years later on the top of a hill overlooking one of Indonesia’s best waves. I guess those videos had a deep impact on my sub-conscious, more than I originally realised.

There was a shelter overlooking the waves on top of the hill, I told one of the locals I was going up there.

He said ‘nah man it’s too hot wait for sunset’, of course I went up anyway..

It was more dense than I expected, but with some exploration I found some clear views of the lines rolling in, with the overhead sun bringing out those deep blues.

Moral of the story: listen to your gut it will lead you to some pretty special places

The natural geography of Indonesia makes for some amazing landscapes and wave set-ups.

There’s not many other places on the planet, where you can lookout across the bay and have views of volcanoes in front of world-class waves.

I shredded myself on the reef the day before and probably shouldn’t have been out in the water with some saucey reef cuts, but the swell and vibes were up..

In hindsight, this was one of those times where it paid off to be uncomfortable, after all the cuts healed fine.

I’ve been shooting film a lot more recently which has been a really enjoyable process. I find film brings out a different style of creativity, I’m not hunting as much for shots and I’m enjoying what’s in front of me more.
