A day in Noosa with @loui.little.legend and @rodrigocassianomusic

Taking you to March in Noosa when Loui & Rodrigo won the Surfing Dog Championship taking out the best wave at the Noosa Festival of Surfing.

Revisiting the place where he won his title for the first time since becoming champion, Loui was spotted patrolling the point, talking to the local surfers, enjoying the rainbow and reading about his victory in the paper with his owner Rodrigo.

We’ve all got our eyes on something, some just know what they want more than others.

I love the adventure of going to DI, it’s far enough away and wild enough that you never know what to expect with shifting weather patterns and sandbanks, along with wildlife encounters to keep you on your toes.

On this day there was harsh lighting, terns everywhere, small barrels and a group of surfers that couldn’t take their eyes off it.

In what turned out to be one of my favourite days of the trip, the mission to get here with some twists and turns, coupled with a lack of sleep made it more worthwhile and memorable.

I had a pretty good idea that sunrise was going to turn it on for me from Chureito Pagoda thanks to the ‘SeeMtFuji’ website. Visibility from the north (the pagodas location) was rated 10/10 for the morning only, before the clouds rolled in and covered her for the afternoon.

I’d highly recommend checking this website before making the effort to get out there as the mountain is only visible approximately 80 days per year.

🇯🇵 Visual highlights from Mt. Fuji, Sensō-ji Temple, Niseko Ski Resort and Tokyo.

When travelling overseas I like to immerse myself in the new sights and sounds of the culture I’m in, seeking out those cultural experiences we can’t get back home.

Even though I’m an outdoor guy I still find myself at home exploring temples and big cities like Tokyo.

1 - Walking through the Torii gate at Chureito Pagoda with Mt. Fuji in the distance, a commanding yet serene presence.
2 - Sounds of the gong ringing throughout the grounds at Sensō-ji Temple. A monk rings the gong/time bell (toki no kane) at 6:00am every morning, a tradition which dates back to the Edo period.
3 - Monks chant and pray in the main hall of Sensō-ji Temple. A peaceful and powerful spectacle.
4 - Finding that flow and feeling at Niseko Ski Resort after lapping Rinkan bowl all afternoon
5 - A man and his prayer beads at Sensō-ji Temple. This temple is only a 35 minute train from Omote-Sando station, which is virtually in the heart of Tokyo.
6 - Train ride views on the way out to Mt. Fuji on the Chuo Line.

Postcard views from Mt. Fuji 🇯🇵 that deserve some space in the digital world.

Japan has been on my list of countries forever yet somehow Mt. Fuji wasn’t on my radar.

When some other plans fell through suddenly I had the opportunity and weather window to likely catch Fuji in all its glory.

It started off as a shaky mission to get there without data to check if I was on the right track, I took 2 wrong trains before finally getting some clarity on how to get to Fuji-Q Highland Station from the help desk despite our limited ability to understand each other.

4 hours later I checked into my pod hostel, super excited to catch her for sunrise.

Awaking at 4:30am and moments later en route to Chureito Pagoda, the faint outline of Fuji started to emerge.

Its sheer, snow- capped crater and towering size at 3,776 left a searing impression on me.

Upon visiting Fuji it quickly became apparent how it got its status as a ‘Sacred Place and Source of Artistic Inspiration’.

After not seeing snow for a week this was definite

After not seeing snow for a week this was definitely one of the highlights of the 🇯🇵 trip.

20cm came down overnight and a crew had assembled to make the most of the fresh stuff.

The idea was to do a warm-up and then head to the Mt. Niseko Annupuri summit, but that idea was scrapped in favour of heading straight for the summit.

I’m glad it was as we trekked up the mountain, we broke through the clouds revealing a blue bird day, vast mountain ranges and hordes of people all with the same idea.

Niseko Annupuri suddenly looked like mini Everest, but we were on the right side of the mountain and there were still fresh lines to be taken.

Time well spent camping out in our hammocks close to home on a work night.

With some @nakieco hammocks arriving in the mail that day, the call was made to ascend up Mt. Cooroora and make an evening out of it.

Let’s just say the hammocks held up to some strong winds ripping through the peak overnight but some trees didn’t fare so well @hoffmannjarred

On a final note what better way to celebrate another lap around the sun waking up with the sun beaming through the trees straight onto our camp with some good company.

This is the year to stop putting on hold things you’ve always wanted to do.

Moments from the Rip Curl GromSearch of 2024 in Phillip Island.

Another Rip Curl GromSearch has come and gone since 2024 but going back through old work now feels like the right time to share some moments from the ‘24 edition.

I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to shoot this event for @visitbasscoast & @weareexplorers, featuring some of the best young surfers from around Australia, with Ava Holland and Mitchell Peterson taking out the titles.

Whilst some young surfers were having some breakthrough moments during the event, personally I was also having a breakthrough moment. A month earlier I had been in Indonesia shooting surfers around the islands mainly for fun but also selling the odd photo here and there. This job sounded too good to be true just coming back from photographing surfers in Indonesia and ending up in Victoria at the time of the event.   The timing seemed fortuitous from the outside but isn’t all about timing anyway? It was as if the work I had been doing over the preceding months and years without even realising it had put me in the perfect position to shoot and create content centred around the surfing events down in Phillip Island.   A gentle reminder to follow your interests and that the Bass Coast might just be Victoria’s most underrated coastline.
