Big wide open valleys reminiscent of Scotland on the way to Du Gia.
A typical small village in North Vietnam. Big areas used for growing rice, small houses with red roofs lying at the base of karst mountain ranges

I woke up one day and the thought of travelling to Vietnam crept into my mind, I don’t know what sparked it but I’m glad that ember came from the ether.

It’s a country that has something for everyone. Food lovers, culture lovers & adventure lovers alike and it’s cheap!

A road cuts through the rice fields below Na Lay Peak in Bac Son. From above the rice fields randomly configure a unique pattern.
A unique angle of Tu San canyon from a vantage point near Ma Pi Leng sky path. The turquoise water contrasts against the green cliffs and red rock.
From across the valley a farmer tends to his rice fields with a whipper snipper, standing out against the lush green with a red shirt.

I’m not in the slightest Vietnamese but you can’t help but feel somewhat proud of where the country is today after some brutal wars waged on their turf and tough economic conditions.

The north has soul and is developing.  The kids give off a sense of optimism for the future,  often approaching you with enthusiasm to practice their English and some jokes to say to their friends.

Kids run up the steep steps of Ban Gioc temple. The architecture is traditional.
Three girls in pink traditional dress with flower bouquets, pose shyly in front of the camera. Doc Tham Ma, Vietnam.
A farmer bearing a purple umbrella leads a herd of cattle through a small village in the North of Vietnam.
Farms in Vietnam tend to be right next to the road. A woman stands on the edge with a big bundle of grass after harvesting.
Four kids give peace signs to the camera in front of a small convenience store in Bac Son, Vietnam.

From the water looking out to the boat in Cat Ba island that would take us to the wall to climb the karst cliffs. Climbers sit on the front of the boat waiting fo their turn.
A climber hangs on casually and cool-ly above the water in Cat Ba island. Looking confident but also insignficant.
Women sits on a tree trunk looking out to the main cascade of Ban Gioc waterfall. Wearing a traditional Vietnamese hat.
Sunrise in the valley of Tam Coc, Vietnam. Splitting through the mountains and glowing orange.
The cascades at Ban Gioc waterfall, Vietnam. A half rainbow appears in front of the fast flowing cascades.
Sunrise on top Na Lay mountain, Bac Son. The ranges extend as far as the eye can see.

The mountain ranges in the north are endless and inspiring, someone ought to introduce hiking and rock-climbing here, there is so much untapped potential.

The location of the villages and the people that live here are incredible.

On an overcast day on the Ma Pi Leng skypath above the huge green valleys of Tu San canyon below.

In the cities there is a sense of beauty even amongst all the chaos and pollution, the streets are bustling with activity at all times during the day and often at night time as well.

The markets are vibrant, colourful and rich in smells and most importantly the food is delicious.

A man sits in his temporary roadside shelter, with calligraphy paintings as signage. Hanoi, Vietnam.
A woman stands in front of Bich Dong pagoda in Tam Coc. The pagoda is a classic Buddhist structure from ancient times.
Scooters line the dimly lit streets of Hanoi. A man is walking with his food in a plastic bag,
A woman walks her bicycle towards the camera, in the opposite direction of the flowing traffic.
A man rides his scooter down the steep dirt road towards the lake and famous mountain called God's Eye
A man squats on a docked raft at the lakes edge of God's Eye Mountain to wash his hands.
A traditional raft floats on the calm waters, with God's Eye in the background reflecting a mirror image.

I almost forgot to mention that there are World Heritage sites, jaw-dropping rice terraces and ancient architecture and traditions.

What are you waiting for?
